Just south of the Arctic Circle, in the forested mountains of the Norwegian province Helgeland, is the Øvre ForslandHydroelectric Power Plant. It’s no ordinary power plant—designed by architecture firm Stein Hamre, the plant’s engineering complements its extraordinary landscape with beautiful design.
“The plant has been designed to reflect the characteristics of the landscape, which is located on the river bed in a clearing at the edge of a spruce forest” said the architects in a statement. “The main inspiration for the design was the verticality and the irregularity of the spruce trees.”
Most of Norway’s electricity comes from hydro, geothermal, and wind power, and the government is hoping the Øvre Forsland Hydroelectric Power Plant will serve double duty, attracting hikers and tourists to the area while educating the public about green energy.
